AFA President Claudio Tapia to Testify in $19.3 Billion Tax Case

Buenos Aires, March 11 (NA) – The president of the AFA, Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, will appear this Thursday at 12:00 to testify in the courts of the Economic Criminal Court in the context of the case for the alleged retention of taxes and social security contributions amounting to 19.3 billion pesos. The testimony before Economic Criminal Court Judge Diego Amarante is scheduled for 12:00, after the AFA's treasurer, Pablo Toviggino, did the same on Wednesday, presenting a written statement as part of the same investigation. The investigation seeks to determine if there were irregularities in the withholding and payment of taxes related to Argentine football, in a case that also reaches other AFA leaders and has had a strong impact in the sports and political spheres. Tapia's defense had unsuccessfully requested the nullity of his summons to testify. The judge also prohibited both from leaving the country, four months before the World Cup in the United States, although later Tapia was granted the corresponding permission.

What is being investigated The case investigates the alleged misappropriation of more than $19.353 billion corresponding to tax withholdings and social security contributions between March 2024 and September 2025. As part of this situation, last weekend there was a football strike in all categories in support of the AFA clubs, which consider it a political initiative promoted by the government of Javier Milei in the midst of the struggle for the implementation of SADs (Sports Joint-Stock Companies), which the government promotes and Tapia and company reject.
